Position: Chief Executive Officer
ORGANIZATION: A-Life Medical
www.alifemedical.com
LOCATION: San Diego, CA
COMPANY BACKGROUND
A-Life is the leader in providing the healthcare industry with automated solutions based on its patented Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology. A-Life's products provide efficient workflow management and coding solutions; enable the abstraction of medical data for specialized purposes; and improve clinical data management and physician productivity at the point of care. A-Life utilizes its NLP algorithms along with proprietary knowledge bases of more than ten million medical facts to extract meaning from unstructured free text and automate tedious, complicated and labor intensive tasks.
A-Life intends to leverage its leading-edge NLP technology to be the dominant source of NLP-based productivity solutions in the healthcare market. A-Life's core technical competency is the ability to understand medical terminology associated with physician documentation. Currently, A-Life offers automated coding/workflow products and services that address physician billing for radiology, emergency medicine and pathology. Customers include medical billing companies, physician groups and hospitals. The customer base included 91 customers with over 3,000 users across the U.S. A-Life is evaluating other medical specialties for coding such as orthopedics and cardiology. Also, A-Life sees emerging opportunities that include automated hospital inpatient coding, hospital reporting services (such as requirements for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and text mining of clinical information for specialized purposes.
A-Life products are delivered via an Application Service Provider (ASP) model which serves to minimize a customer's investment cost and reduce their implementation cycle to weeks rather than the months (or years) generally required for client/server applications. Revenue is earned on a per transaction basis (involves the coding of a single clinical encounter). Furthermore, the company's ASP model has proven to be a winning solution in ease of use and retention of customers.
Since 2001, A-Life achieved critical mass in its operations, which resulted in substantial improvements in profitability. Fueled by continuing momentum within its sales pipeline and increased industry acceptance of automated coding/workflow solutions using NLP, the Company is well-positioned to continue its growth, with revenue and EBITDA totaling $6.7 million and $1.4 million, respectively, in fiscal 2005. A-Life's customers have implemented the Company's solutions on only a fraction of their total sites, and are working diligently to implement remaining sites, creating a visible implementation backlog representing additional growth within an established customer base. The Company's total implementation backlog with current customers as of February 2006 was $10.5 million. Furthermore, many of the Company's billing company customers are the aggregators in a very fragmented market, bringing even more built-in growth opportunities from the Company's existing customer base.
